Our wagons were formed up ready to laager, and the Q-pounder sent a few shells, fired at long ranges, which seemed to scare the enemy, who then allowed our men to continue their march unmolested. In this engagement Captain Sampson, of Nourse's Horse, was severely wounded, bnt was most gallantly carried out of action by Lance-Corporal Hampton. A battle, fight, or skirmish at Elandsfontein, nine or ten miles west of the city, took place on i6th January (Sunday). The force engaged on our side, which started from Pretoria before daybreak, comprised the mounted infantry, two Q-pounders, one y-pounder, Nourse's Horse under Glynn, parties of the 2d-2ist, 94th, and volunteers the infantry being conveyed some way towards the scene of action by mule wagons.
