Ho- jarth appeared inftantly in great wrath ; to whom Mr. Shard calmly juftihed what he had done, faying " that this was a " very unwarrantable licence ; that he was the injured party's " fon, and that he was ready to defend any fuit at lawj" which, however, was never inftituted.
About 1757, his brother-in-law, Mr. Thornhill, refign- cd the place of king's ferjeant-painter in favour of Mr.
