Oldenburg dying in Aug. 1677, Hooke was appointed to fupply his place, and began to take minutes at the meeting in October; but did not publtfti the " Tranfaclions. " Soon after this, he grew more* referved than formerly; and though he read his Cutlerian ledlures, and often made experi- ments, and (hewed new inventions before the Royal Society, yet he feldom left any account of them to be entered in their regifters; defigning, as he faid, to fit them tor himfelf, and make them public, which how...ever he never pirlor ;ed. In 1686, when fir Ifaac Newton's Principia were publifhed, he laid claim to his difcovery concerning the force and action of gravity, which was warmly refented by that great philofopher. Hooke was in truth a great inventor and difcoverer, but fo l very ambitious, that he would fain have been thought the only- man who could invent and difcover. This made him frequently- lay claim to other people's inventions and difcoveries ; in which, however, as well as in the prefent cafe, the point was generally carried againft him.
