41 At the beginning of the siege drunkenness was, I am sorry to say, rather common amongst the volunteers, and several got into rows ; one man shook his fist in the face of an European sentry whilst in a state of intoxication, another beat a native severely, and so on, day after day, till they were punished with severity.
