It has generally been found that all these complex alloys were altered by remelting, were difficult to ob tain, and required great precautions during the casting, without giving much certainty as to the results.
It has been
...tried to combine separately first, and then together, the cast iron, copper, and tin, without ar riving at truly homogeneous and solid alloys. There fore, it has been necessary to return to bronze, and to study thoroughly the properties of this metal. We have not to examine here the applications of cast iron, wrought iron, or steel to the manufacture of ordnance.
