The amount of harmful salts that may be present in irrigation water before the crops are injuriously effected varies with the extent to which salts themselves occur in the soil, with the amount of evaporation and concentration after the application of the water, and with the conditions of drainage.
If the soil contains a large amount of harmful salts, and but little water of a high salt content is frequently applied, then evaporation will so increase the salts present in the soil that crops can no longer grow.
