Since 1800 it has been the political centre and capital of the United States. We went at once to the Capitol, and devoted a morning to its in vestigation. It was foun...ded by Washington himself in 1794, and has been growing ever since, though still far from completion. It contains the Council-chambers of the Senators and Representatives, the Supreme Court of Justice, the Congress Library, and a number of handsome rooms, including a vast Rotunda, the centre of the building, surmounted by a lofty dome, and a National Statuary Hall, adorned with statues and busts, of small artistic merit, but great historical interest, representing American statesmen, among them Washington, Hamilton, Jefferson, and Lincoln.
