The real causes of the long wars between Rome and Carthage were commercial jealousy and rivalry for the control of the western Mediterranean, particularly of the island of Sicily.

After a single great naval victory and many tragic disasters, the Romans finally succeeded in inflict- ing upon the Carthaginians a decisive naval defea

259. Terms of the Treaty ; Transfer of Sea Power. A treaty was at length arranged, the terms of which required that Carthage should give up all claims to the island of Sicily, surrender all her prisoners, and pay an indemnity of 3200 talents (about $4,000,000), one third of which was to be paid down, and the balance in ten yearly payments. Thus ended (241 B.C.), after a continuance of twenty-four years, the first great struggle between Carthage and Rome.
One important result of the war was the crippling of the sea power of the Phoenician race, which from time immemorial had been a most prominent factor in the history of the Mediterranean lands, and the giving practically of the control of the sea into the hands of the Romans.
