CHAPTER XIX.
AGINCOURT. TREATY OF TROVES. DEATH OF HENRY V.
JT required a siege of five weeks to take the town of Harfleur, in France, and when it was taken Henry had serious thoughts of abandoning it and going home again. His army was wasted by disease, and the French, as he heard, were collecting in great numbers to oppose him, but he determined to march to his own town of Calais and then decide what it would be best to do.
The French did not get their army together very quickly, for they wer
...e divided among themselves, and the different parties hated each other quite as much as they hated the English; perhaps more. When they were ready, they sent to ask Henry by what road he intended to march. "By the one that will take me straight to Calais!" he answered, and sent the messengers away with a present of a hundred crowns. He was not going out of his way to find the French, nor did he mean to refuse to fight if he met them. As they neared the little village of Azincourt (which the English have changed to Agincourt) they saw the splendid French army waiting for them to come up.
