In 1870, an oratorio was given for the first time in the Cathedral on the evening of the first day of the Festival, instead of the usual secular concert in the Shire Hall.
The balls which were held each night after the Concert, were discontinued first at Gloucester in 1874 ; and about the same period efforts were made to discontinue the Festi- vals, which failed.
