THE War of 181
...2 between Great Britain and the United States was terminated on December 14, 18 14, by the Treaty of Ghent, by which it was stipulated that *' all territory, places and possessions whatsoever, taken by either party from the other during the war, or which may be taken after the signing of this treaty, shall be restored without delay. " There was no allusion in the treaty to the northwest coast, or to any territory west of the Lake of the Woods, hence the Oregon question was left for further discussion, and the Columbia remained disputed territory.
