What reading level is A Short History of Penzance, S. Michael's Mount, S. Ives, And the Land's End District book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

Paul is of course post-medis^val, i,e, after the burning in Elizabeth's reign. The date of Sennen is given 1441-43 (?) ; Sancreed seems to be of rather later date. S. Just belongs to the same epoch, nothing now remaining of the church which Bishop Grandisson consecrated in 1336.* So this district is poorer in early mediaeval work than very many in England. Our antiquities rather are of the Ancient British or Romano-British age, than of the days of the Crusades. The fonts may be ancient, the edi...fices themselves are of the latter end of the middle ages, the generation after Geoffrey Chaucer lived and wrote.
* The interest expressed at the Ardueological Congress of 1876 shows how valuable our Penwith churches are from an architectural and archaeological point of view.
Digitized by LriOOQlC no Penzance^ St AfickaePs Mounts and Land^s End, Our rood screens must h'ave been very rich, and were an important point in the low roofed churches. The famed screen at Burian, with its lich carving, once glorious in colour, the disused screen of Sancreed (now in the vestry) are fine examples of old Cornish screens, in olden times the most prominent points in our churches, and probably not destroyed till the ravages of Shrubsall and the Puritans.
