They were well armed with lance, sword, mace, and axe, with ring mail and scale armour, with big machines (fonda and balista) for throwing stones and darts, and battering rams. As compared with the Goths of Spain, a nobility supported by war-bands of personal retainers and adventurers, the Franks, owing to the killing off of their minor chieftains, were an undisciplined horde.
