But in the seventeenth century, when the spoils of the Church had enriched its estates and the feudal power of the lairds had scarcely begun to decay, the Munros shared with the Mackenzies and the Rosses the control, almost absolute, of that great central Highland shire of Ross, which str...etches, north of the Caledonian Canal, from sea to sea. Their lands, lying just north of Inverness, which stands at the upper entrance of the great canal and is the capital of the Highlands, cov- ered a large territory.
At an event comparatively so unimportant as a funeral they could easily at that time muster a thousand fighting men of the name of Munro. 19 Their tartan, is a very gay affair ; but they have the right to wear, also, the more sombre plaid of the Black Watch, a right shared with the 45 five other clans who established the regiment in 1729.
