There they met a steamboat with further supplies and were ferried across the river, the work of a week. Thence the route was up the Yellowstone Valley, two hundred miles to Pompey's Pillar, then northward about fifty miles to the Mussel Shell River, a tributary of the Missouri, and back again to Fort Rice.
