How on earth did I expect such a de jure authority to be spon- taneously generated by a Church which had not got it already ? The only answer on my own principles would have been that reunion with Rome must come within fifty years if our Ark was not to be torpedoed by Modernism, but I am sure I did not mean that.
Whatever I meant, I had certainly given public expression to the idea that, hi certain conceivable circumstances, secession (in a body) from the Church of England might become a duty f...or myself and those who thought with me. I am not sure why : it might have been imagined that, on my principles, a "spiritual connection " which had survived the Reformation could survive anything ; that no action taken by it, however public and however official, could compromise its members. Some of my friends did, later, take a point of view not far removed from this. Mr. Gurney, in an inspired moment, when somebody had told him to pull himself together, replied, " I haven't got any together " ; we hailed the utterance : perhaps the Church of England had " not got any together " it was not sufficiently an organism to have a vulnerable centre.
