Concentrated sulphuric acid, however, forms a sulphonate which is soluble in water. The solution in the distilling flask was now extracted with ether (sodium chloride was for some time used to first saturate the solution, but this contaminated the ether extract, and was eventually discarded), and the ether evaporated.
