What reading level is A Text-Book of Chemistry, Intended for the Use of Pharmaceutical And Medical Students book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

These gases con- sist of nitrogen trioxide, nitrosyl chloride, hydrochloric acid, chlorine, and sometimes iodine. The HCl is formed from sodium chloride present in the nitrate, which with the nitric acid forms nitrosyl chloride (HNO3 -|- 3HO = XOCl + CI2 -|- 2H2O). All these pass over at the beginning of the distillation.
To remove nitrous fumes, which impart a yellow to orange color to the acid, it is redistilled with a current of air passing upward through the condensing coil. For chemically
...pure acid, pure materials are used. Xitric acid is also produced (where water-power for the economical production of electric cur- rent is available) from the atmosphere by drawing air through a special form of furnace in which is contained one or more large and powerful arc flames produced by an alternating current of very high pressure (5000 volts) and tem- perature of about 3500°. The electrolyzed gas leaving the furnace contains about 2 per cent, of nitric oxide (NO), which, upon rapid cooling, unites with the oxygen of the air to form nitrogen peroxide (NOj).
