LAHORE 251 The air was thick with the smoke of incessant salutes, and all day long one heard the guns continuously boom- ing. I, too, paid my state visits to the Maharajahs of Patiala and Kapurthala, but did not attempt to see the retiring Governor, as I knew his time would be more profitably occupied than in granting me an interview.
