We may therefore safely conclude that, as animal sacrifice was originally of divine insti- titution, and under both the Patriarchal and Mosaic dispensations, was strictly expiatory of moral transgressions, and of vicarious import, so also it had a direct reference to the sacrifice of the death of Christ, and derived all its in- trinsic value from the atonement, which was made for the sins of the world, when he suffered on ^' the accursed tree.
