The interpretation here given of this im- portant passage is obvious, and consistent; it is supported by the great body of sound critics and commentators; and it cannot be set aside without gross violence to the sacred text. (See Note I.) The doctrine it teaches, is repeated Eph. ii. 3, where it i...s asserted that men are " by nature the children of wrath." The least that can be meant by this language is, that men are under condemnation from the womb — they are " by nature" under God's wrath. This can be only on the ground of the sin of some other being, who of course is our first parent.
The fact set forth in both these passages, that Adam's posterity are judicially con- demned on account of his sin, shows that he was their federal head, and that as such, the guilt of his sin is imputed to them.
