" Here is an additional element of difficulty in this story, for we find Lady Byron as late as 1820 in communication with Mrs. Leigh, and likely to be influenced by her. In 1838, however, though she still has her ;^7, ooo a year, and no champion of Greek independence to help her to spend it, she allows Mrs. Leigh to live in poverty and debt, and to be so overwhelmed with money anxieties and miseries as to be compelled to say, in language reminding one strongly of what her brother would have use...d, that " she must be composed of lead to be alive" !
And this brings me to a question which, after all that has been said against Lord Byron and in favour of his wife, I have no intention of leaving untouched. This is the real character of Lady Byron. She is supposed to have been a saint. Mrs. Stowe, the editor of Macmillan, and scores of other pious enthusiasts, say that she was " divine. " Let us see some proof of her " divinity. " The following facts have been contributed to the contro- versy by no less well-known and trustworthy a person than Mr.
