Fompei^ on the other side of Vesuvius, was covered with ashes.
Great excavations have been made there, and smaller ones are still in progress. From the rear of Vesuvius, there stretches a chain of hills along the shore of the Bay, for about twenty miles out to the ocean, where they seem to tenninate abruptly.
