The signifi- cance of this rail episode in respect to the character of Mr. Lincoln and his subsequent conduct of the affairs of our country through its most dreadful trial, will be manifest to all thoughtful persons. His honesty, sagacity and tact were the foundations upon which he stood immovable, when saving our coun- try, until the day of his death.
I have for this reason considered it my duty in this respect especially to report to you and in the interest of accurate history state the facts which I have for so many 93 LINCOLN By MEN years been possessed of in data and in an excellent memory.
