Further, as Cooper develops the plot, Susquesus too heard something in the night as he stood guarding the slumbering Mordaunt. Mordaunt finds the presence of a mill "still more startling than the discovery of 140 the skeleton" (341). Drawing forth a map from his pocket, Mordaunt can find only the notation for a proposed site and no evidence of a grant having been bestowed.
