He held the conception of duty which Lincoln held when he crushed out the rebellion against the United States author- ity in eleven States. (Applause). He holds the only conception of duty that an American President ought to hold — that he is to sustain the laws of the United States and uphold its authority wherever attacked ; and it will be an ill day indeed for the Republic when we get a President who departs from the teach- ings of Washington and Lincoln, and claims that the authority of the United States is not to be upheld everywhere and at all times.
