One of the first, if not the first, of the free trad- ers to enter the old French country was Alexan- der Henry, the elder. In 1761 Henry went from Montreal to Fort Michilimackinac. This fort was a strategic point, as it commanded the route into Lake Superior, and was the chief depot for the furs from the territory comprising Wisconsin and Michi- gan.
