As luck would have it, I studied first Mr. William Arch- er's edition of Dr. Brandes' William Shake- speare; for years I have had an immense admi- ration for Dr. Brandes. Then I bought more books on the subject than I could well afford — I had to write a play to recoup my fallen for- tunes.
