Yet it is also clear that as with the Greeks, so with the Eomans, grammar remained the inevitable first study, with rhetoric and probably dialectics im- mediately following, and that the fourfold division into arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy held its own as a natural distribution for the suc- ceeding studies.
