THE MASTER It seems likely that the enduring fame of the most remarkable man, in many ways, of his day, will be founded chiefly upon his stories of war — the blind- ing flashes of revelation and interpretation that make up the group under the laconic legend, "Sol- dier,"' in his greatest book, In the Midst of Life.
