The result has been that negotiat- ing and paying banks have become involved in disputes and litigation, in some instances because of alleged lack of care in scrutinizing documents, although the same degree of scrutiny has in other cases been recognized as 142 AMERICAN COMMERCIAL CREDITS fulfilment of their duty in that connection. Now that opening banks are a unit in dealing with accredited buyers on this point, the foundation is laid upon which to build a more consistent policy with respect to the protection of the mercantile risk, which will be considered in detail in Chapter XIV.
