During the struggle for the control of the Northern Pacific its stock sold for a part of one day at $1, 000 for a share whose face value was only $100. Since December I, 1901, the Northern Securities Company has been organized in New Jersey with a capital of $400, 000, 000 for the purpose, it is supposed, of com- bining the Great Northern, the Northern Pacific and the Burlington roads into one great whole. Governor Van Sant, of Minnesota, claims such a consolidation is contrary to public welfare and law and has invited the aid of State and United States law in an attempt to defeat the plan, having brought suit in the United States Supreme Court, as well as in the State court, to test the issues involved.
