Each river-basin plan includes a series of dams and reservoirs. For in the reservoir areas, the Corps of Engineers is authorized by Congress to construct and operate public parks and recreational facili- ties. The water areas are open to the public without charge. Conse- quently, today, in once arid regions of the West, thousands of men, women and children who previously knew little or nothing about boat- ing, swimming and fishing are enjoying these healthy activities.
Not too far from Oklahoma City, at Denison Dam, on the Red River in Texas and Oklahoma, more than two million people visited and en- joyed the recreational facilities of the reservoir in 1948.
