The catastro...phe M^as pro- duced chiefly by the haughtiness and impru- dence of the white planters, in opposing de- SLAVE-TRADE. 39 crees of the French government, which con- cerned only the rights of freemen. In this civil war, in which the uhite planteis were arrayed against the laws of the national as- sembly, and the planters of colour in defence of them, it is not surprising that the slaves should take sides with their nearest relations. The consequent atrocities, most unquestion- ably resulted from the remembrance of the former barbarity* of masters.
