32 National Defense Education Act Loans. Under the provisions of this Act, a student may borrow for college expenses up to $1,000 during any one year and up to $5,000 during his entire course in higher education. The borrower must be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in need of the amount of his loan to pursue his education, be a U.S. National and, in the opinion of the University, must be capable of maintaining good standing in his course of study. Special consideration is given to... superior students who express a desire to teach in elementary or secondary schools, and whose academic background indicates a superior capacity or prepara- tion in science, mathematics, engineering, or a modern foreign language. Repayment of the loan must be completed within a ten-year period, to commence one year after the borrower ceases to be a full-time student. No interest on the student loan may accrue prior to the beginning of the repay- ment schedule, and interest thereafter is to be paid at the rate of 3 per cent per annum.
