' Catch another, then, ' said the General, and addeii solemnly, after an unmeaning pause, 'Do the best you can ' Soon he proceeded to say, ' You will be followed by Captain Cordon, with two hundred men, who vrill spike the guns in the citadel, ' Captain Wickham Hoffman, who had stood by listening to the General as a small boy would listen to the instructions of a severe father, now ventured to add, ' General, wouhi it not be well to have the men dig away the parapet and throw the guns of the citadel into the river.
