To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

The public town offices were all kept at the centre of the iirst parish. For some years, however, before the year 1773, it was apparent that the seeds of dissention were sown ; and they sprung up from time to time. The method of dividing the school money, the plan of holding town meetings, and of keeping the grammar school, were subjects of contest. The parish of Longmeadow, and those on the west side of Connecticut river, united against the first parish. Chicopee was divided. In transacting th...e ordinary town business, parties were nearly balanced : commonly there was a small majority against the first parish. In choosing representa- tives, Wilbraham united with the first parish, and made a majority. Contention, whenever any efforts were made to transact town bu- siness, became constant and violent. For a year or two, the town meetings were holden on the west side of the river, and the town 41 records kept there. In one instance, when the choice of munici- pal officers was attempted, after spending four days, only a part of them were chosen.
