" It was preached soon after Jefferson's accession to the Presidency, to an assembly, the mass of which, including the preacher him- self, was strenuously opposed to the new administration. Thus was he peculiarly fitted to guide and control the young men gathered in a seminary of learning such as that over which he was ultimately called to preside. Altogether, he possessed, by nature and acquired ex- cellence, a combination of gifts, which singularly qualified him for exerting a positive and extended influence.
