Mrs. Phelps, with her usual marked kindness, had given me permission to enter with the diplomatic corps, which saved me much waiting and fatigue, and led me through some long, low galleries filled with interesting old pictures of George II. and George III. and their families. How I longed to stop and examine them ; but I could not. I had two young ladies who were spoiling for a dance ; so we deposited A STATE BALL AT BUCKINGHAM PALACE 211 our wraps in a rather dim chamber and then began to find our way through a long, serpentine, circuitous route to the ballroom.
