Francis Parkman was born in Boston on September i6, 1823. He belonged to what Dr. Holmes called the " Brahmin caste of New England," that is to say, his ances- tors had been men of education and character generation after generation. The family had endowed two professor- ships at Harvard College.
In his boyhood Parkman's health was not robust ; and he was sent to live in the country on the edge of the wild tract known as Middlesex Fells.
