Benjamin Butler, avIio owned the farm on State street known as the Corn Hill farm, now the property of George B. Fletcher, was a son of Dr. Benjamin and Diadama (Hyde) Butler of Norwich, Conn. , where he was born January 30, 1764. Lie married Hannah Avery of Groton.

...423 They settled at New London, Conn. , and afterwards re- moved to New York city, where he carried on the business of a broker for many years. In 1806 they came to Oxford. Mr. Butler was one of the founders of St. Paul's Epis- copal church in this village, and occupied a house on the site of the present church edifice in 1807-8. Later he occu- pied a residence on Merchant street, and then for a year or so the old mansion, later known as the McKoon house. From here he removed to the farm above mentioned, and became extensively engaged in sheep raising, and buying and selling land.
