This shaft, as well as the two ventilation shafts, is built of reinforced concrete. Its outside dimensions are 34 x 43 feet and the bottom of the concrete invert is 43 feet below the street surface. On the southwesterly side, or the side facing Boston, a circular opening 33 feet in diameter was left, and a temporary bulkhead was constructed of tongued and grooved sheeting supported by horizontal steel beams. On the northeast side, a rectangular opening was left for connection to the open cut or... rectangular portion of the tunnel. This opening was bulk- headed in a manner similar to the circular opening.
The excavation for this shaft was carried down for the most part by the use of a grab bucket operated by a gasoline- driven crane of the crawler type. The banks were held by use of horizontal tongued and grooved sheeting supported on the flanges by steel H columns, driven vertically into the ground and spaced about 10 feet apart. These columns were braced where required by a system of wooden trusses.
