Early in March, however, a serious disaster occurred to the iron and slate roof, then in process of erection. The north half settled and fell, and the portion left on the walls was damaged and insecure, so that the reconstruction of the entire roof on a plan of greater strength than at first, became necessary ; the work of comiDleting the building was, in consequence, much de- layed. The fallen portion of the roof was rebuilt in a heavier and stronger manner than at first, and the standing portion corre- spondingly strengthened, at a cost of $2,357 — the whole roof being made quite firm and secure.
