It is not for me to answer the ques- tion, but I know of no good reason why, notwithstanding such a question may be asked, the vast influence of climatic law should not be broadly stated, — and a germain statement should not be neglected, viz. : that as we approach the north the vine disappears, or produces a grape less fit for wine, and that, to meet this want of some stimulus, man distils an ardent spirit from grains or roots, which too often proves a curse to himself and to his progeny.
