To the Honorable Board of Health.
Of the City and Comity of San Francisco — Gentlemen: I herewith submit the fortieth annual report of this insti- tution for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1893.
During the past year $20,000 has been expended, under the direct super- vision of the Board of Supervisors in renewing the greater portion of the floors, roofs and sewage plumbing of the institution.
The work, th...ough slighted in some places — the foundation of the Potrero Avenue fence, for example — has, on the whole, been fairly well done; and the buildings are now in passable condition.
I am pleased to be able to omit from this report a statement which appears in those of my predecessors for the past fifteen years with a wearisome regu- larity which might be amusing were it not such an incisive commentary on the recognition accorded to the claims for consideration of this institution, and the apparent indifference to the danger of loss not only of the city's property, but also of the lives of the unfortunates under her care.
