For this reason, your Report must be a stirring appeal to the hearts of the Directors and the public at large. Extraordinary times require extraordinary exertions, and who knows whether these days of trial and hardship are not destined by a divine Providence to strengthen the ties of fraternal feeling and affection between man and man.
This much must be admitted by every man of judgment, that never a better opportunity for practical charity was offered than at present, and there will be assured...ly many families which, under ordinary circumstances would take care of them- selves, while in this calamity, during the cold days of winter, they will look for help to our Association. In consideration of these circumstances, I beg of you, gentlemen, to exert all your influence to get a select Board of energetic, self-denying, charitable men for the hard times coming, that the vessel of our benevolent Institution be steered through the brewing storm without injury.
If in ordinary times it was always my principle to remind of the future, and to put a stress upon the Hospital and the Hospital Fund, in this period of trial it seems to me much bet- ter to be solely engaged by present emergencies, and more so, as the Hospital, in its final realization and completion, is at any rate secured by the funds set apart for this purpose, though small they may be, with their natural increase, until the par- ticular care for it can be resumed at the return of more pros- perous times.
