From North Carolina Professor Hedrick went to New York. Here he was employed as a clerk in the Mayor s office, at the same time lecturing and teaching in the city. In 1 86 1 he gave up this work to become a principal exam iner in the United States Patent Office in the Department of Chemistry and Metallurgy, where he remained till his death. From 1872 till 1876 he was also Professor of Chem istry and Toxicology in the University of Georgetown. During the war he relieved many distressed fugitives
... and prisoners from North Carolina. This was a work in which his gentle nature took great delight. After the war he was an earnest worker for the restoration of civil order in his native State. He died at his residence in Washington, Sep tember 2, 1886.
Of his scientific services in the Patent Office this is not the place to speak at length. His long period of service in dicates that his work was entirely satisfactory. An asso ciate in the Patent Office, in an article in The American Inventor (Cincinnati, Ohio, ) September, 1886, speaks of this part of his career.
