Mr. Helmore was amazed, Mr. Norman was delighted. Here was a brav...e disciple truly ! — a lady, young and delicately nur- tured, who would sit up all night beside a fever-stricken patient, with no more thought of infection or fatigue than one of the holv people of old mentioned above. No weather could deter her from her work, no task was too difficult or disagreeable for her to undertake.
Hitherto Mr. Norman had looked on all girls as a hindrance rather than a help in this work ; a class useful and necessary in their way, no doubt, but, as a class, the reverse of congenial to him.
