La scienza ci verrà data unicamente dalla facoltà di distinguere, quella che il Bain chiama the power of the di- scrimination^ e non già da quella di almanaccare spiega- zioni frettolose ed infondate, segnatamente se queste siano messe al servizio di risentimenti e di fini settarii.
E codesta discriminazione limitiamola al campo vero deir osservazione diretta. Studiamo, per esempio, studia- mo pure anche le scienze dello spirito» ma occupiamoci delle operazioni non delle essenze delle facoltà, tanto più che non è necessario andare più in là per gettare le fondamen- ta di una scienza che sia una guida e una forza.
