The arch, which is only 18 inches above the floor, the fire- place, and the side Avails, are built permanently, but the hearth is built so that it may be replaced many times during the life of the furnace. A thin bedding is laid down, and on this the bottom, consisting of single fire brick on edge, is packed in. The slightest crevice left would allow the molten liquid tin to stream through, so that special pre- cautions have to be taken to have all the joints tight ; their faces should fit like sheets of glass against each other. When they are all laid down the surface should have an even slope with a 5-inch fall towards the tap-hole.
